Good evening, MU SIGMA PHIans!
Some of you might remember me as the possessive, precocious, aggressive toddler who was a persistent presence at many of the meetings you had with my grandfather. Pero nag bu-ot naman ako, in fairness. Not even the promise of food could deter me from the unwavering desire for attention.
At the time, I didn’t understand what was going on. Sometimes I would sit on my grandfather’s lap and listen to these long discussions, wondering what could possibly require these regular meetings. Words like “sorority” and “fraternity” were foreign to me. Ka-loca actually, because englishera gid ako sang una.
I grew up as an only child – willingly, might I add. I never felt like I needed any siblings or people to depend on outside of my nuclear family. In fact, I felt much more comfortable being the person people depended on. My grandfather always challenged me to better myself in every capacity so I could stand on my own merits – whether it was sitting up in the hospital bed while I memorized a three-page speech, or encouraging me to expand my palate. My favourite soup was fish lip soup. I was seven.
But then I came to Canada. While my parents did everything to ensure I felt comfortable, I felt out of my element. It wasn’t until then that I understood that family meant more than blood.
When my grandfather passed away, I felt heartbroken. I sobbed in a university washroom with a paper due the next day and an exam the week after. But it wasn’t until after he was gone that I learned more about him.
In the same way that he challenged me and supported me throughout my childhood, I realized that he was also a perpetual support to many of you. He taught me the value of unconditional love – never expecting anything for his service. I suppose you could say that was his love language, and it has truly manifested through MU SIGMA PHI. Kag naintindihan ko na kung ngaa ka laba sang mga meetings.
The MU SIGMA PHI network in Canada were more than eager to help my family in any way they could. My Tita Chelo, a MU SIGMA PHI an and a past MIS, was my sponsor at confirmation. She remains a constant advisor in my life – even today. She gives great advice on speeches too, by the way.
Even after my grandfather’s passing, his teachings and the small window he offered into Greek life have continued to guide the way I live. He taught me Sacrifice, whether it’s in the love for those around you or the meaningful work you do. He taught me Loyalty, and the importance of keeping your promises. He taught me Obedience, and listening carefully to counsel from your loved ones. And most importantly, he taught me Service, to give back to others in hopes of creating a more equitable world for all.
With all that said – salamat gid, MU SIGMA PHI ans, sa pagpadayon sang organization. On behalf of my family, we would like to congratulate you on many generations of success. May you all continue in the spirit of camaraderie, philanthropy and moral principles. Happy 59 years, and we’re looking forward to what’s to come.
